Betternet VPN Review 2022: Is it Worth Buying?

With so many VPNs in the market, it is obvious that some will rise while others will fall, and this order changes from time to time. However, the Betternet VPN Price has stayed in the same place for quite some time so it is affordable to buy.

Unlike its name, the Betternet VPN review is the worst, and to top it off, it has a premium version that is worse than some free VPNs available on the market.

Is betternet VPN safe, No this VPN is neither safe nor reliable, and in addition, the VPN has somehow managed to make a much bigger list of cons than pros?

Betternet VPN Review: Pros and Cons

PROS CONS

  • Does not require to register before using
  • Easy to use VPN

  • Does not have basic security features such as kill switch
  • Do not guarantee leak protection
  • Unreliable connection
  • Can’t unblock many streaming libraries and geo-restricted sites
  • No customer support for the free users
  • Only 500 MB of daily bandwidth

Betternet VPN Review: Is it Worth Using?

Surprisingly, the VPN did manage to get a large user base, but that does not make up for its cons.

Many people use a VPN to make sure that their device won’t get any malware attacks, and kill switch is one of the best features to prevent the worst-case scenario, which Betternet VPN does not include.

In addition, the VPN does not guarantee that the user’s IP or other valuable information won’t leak to a third-party website.

Other than that, the VPN can’t even unblock many geo-restricted sites and some streaming libraries, which might be banned in some countries and regions.

There are some streaming libraries and geo-restricted sites that it can block, now the question arises that is betternet good for torrenting, No it is not a good choice for torrenting because it has a poor and unstable connection speed.

This means that streaming and torrenting are out of the question, and if for some reason after betternet review, you decide to use this VPN for gaming, then good luck in controlling your rage.

One of the biggest differences between the free and the premium version of this VPN would be that it does not offer customer support for its free users. If a problem happens in the free version, then the user might not be able to fix it, and it can even harm the user’s device and also their online information.

In addition to not giving customer support to the free users, it also imposes a 500 MB of daily data limitation on them. This makes it almost impossible for them to stream or even browse at their heart’s content.

Logging & Jurisdiction

While the VPN does not require the user to register any information to install the app, it changes after installation.

It logs a considerable amount of information about the users, which includes IP address, location, device information, connection timestamps, and even the information of sites where the VPN is used. These are not the things that someone would want from a VPN.

  1. IP Address: It is not just Betternet VPN; there are quite a lot of VPNs that keep a note on the user’s IP address. The VPN providers can easily find out for what reason the VPN is being used for. This is the same as disturbing someone’s privacy.
  2. Location: In addition to the IP address, it also asks for the user’s geographical location and tries to cover it by mentioning that it will give the most suited servers, which is a blatant lie because it does not have a huge variety of servers.
  3. Device Information: There are many devices that do not require safety protocols from a VPN, such as Apple devices. The VPN asks for the device information, though it does not offer anything unique to them.
  4. Connection Timestamps: Betternet VPN keeps track of how long the VPN is being used and on how many devices it has been used.
  5. Keeps Track of the Sites: Betternet keeps a record of the sites for which it is used for. However, it only takes a peek at the domain name, not the full URL.

Betternet VPN keeps track of this many things but still does not give any unique feature or setting to its users, which is one of the biggest disappointments of this VPN.

However, Betternet makes sure that this information won’t get leaked and also makes sure to protect it with high-grade encryptions.

Security & Features

In the VPNs market, the most standard encryption is the AES-256, and Betternet uses AES-256 and AES-128. These encryptions are not the best-advanced encryption but are also not the worst. Though the security could get a buff with features like kill switch, unfortunately, this VPN doesn’t have them.

The servers of Betternet VPN are encrypted with average encryption and do not have features to prevent IP from leaking or the safety of your device from malware attacks. Long story short, is betternet a good VPN, No it is not a good choice for ensuring the security of your online information as well as the safety of the device.

Speed & Reliability

Unlike its name, Betternet is one of the slowest VPNs in the market and has received a rating of 0.9/10 on Ookla, which is one of the most accurate speed testing platforms.

Though the speed is different in each server, and the highest it touched was 80 Mbps, the speed was not constant and had its ups and downs a little too often.

Just like other VPNs in the market, the closest server to your country is the fastest, and the farthest server to your country is the slowest. The most distant server in this VPN failed to reach even 10 Mbps and was also having constant drops.

This is the worst point of this VPN for the free users because it gives a single server to them, which suffers from constant connection fluctuations. When combined with its daily data limitation of 500 MB, nothing will go smoothly.

In addition, this VPN also does constant self-promotion in front of the free users by showing them its subscription plans and a button that says “connect faster” which also brings up the premium subscription plans.

Very Few Streaming Libraries & Geo-Restricted Sites can be Unblocked

Only a one-in-a-hundredth restricted website or streaming library can be unblocked in the free version. As for the premium version, it does get a better number of servers and also removes the bandwidth limitation. Even in the premium version, Betternet is still a bad choice for unblocking streaming libraries and geo-restricted sites.

The premium version can grant access to some blocked sites and libraries, but the internet fluctuation won’t allow the user to browse smoothly.

No P2P Servers

These servers are highly used for torrenting as they hide the user’s location with multiple nodes, allowing them to transfer and receive files on torrent websites safely.

Betternet does claim that its servers support P2P, but in reality, every single one of the servers has blocked P2P traffic.

The VPN can only unblock a handful of torrent sites. Moreover, it does not even support P2P servers, and it won’t allow the users to do all the torrenting activities.

Device Compatibility & Extensions

Fortunately, Betternet is compatible with almost every device, whether it be Mac or Smart TV. Moreover, it can even be installed on routers.

However, device compatibility won’t make up for its weaknesses, and it offers the same features for all the devices it is compatible with.

Other than that, Betternet does have a browser extension for chrome that comes in the premium version. However, the extension does not protect the apps outside of the browser. The add-on makes it difficult for the user’s chrome IP to be traced, as it mixes it up with some other fake IPs of different countries.

Betternet only gives an extension to chrome while other browsers like Opera, Firefox, Safari, and more are left standing.

The extension feature might sound good, but in reality, it is pretty useless. The VPN already has a bad connection speed, and the speed drops even lower with the extension active.

Not only will the speed drop for chrome, but it will also drop in all the apps that are open in the background.

Customer Support

The VPN does not give any type of customer support to the free version users and leaves them hanging with their problems.

As for the premium version, Betternet has 24/7 customer support available via mail but can’t always solve queries.

The user will need to go through a FAQ to prove that they are human. Although the FAQ is simple and easy, it often leaves the user with a short saying of “sorry we can’t respond personally” or with an error page.

In short, if you are having a problem with this VPN, then you are practically on your own.

Easy to Use VPN

It is not like that Betternet is the worst VPN that has ever been created. It is a simple and easy-to-use VPN that can be installed and connected with a single click.

It is a free VPN for all devices, and the premium version supports a good number of simultaneous devices. The VPN doesn’t have a big room for customization, and this can be either good or bad, depending on who is using the VPN.

The user can only change quick connect servers with their most suited servers in the settings. Other than that, there is the “Prevent IP leak” setting that can be either turned on or off, and IP leak is not a thing you would want, so we recommend you to leave it on.

The chrome browser extension is also easy to install and set up. As the user will need to go to their website, then click ‘‘add extension’’ and then a few clicks on allow, and just like that, the extension is ready to go. However, we don’t recommend using it because it will not only slow the speed of chrome but will also drop the speed of all the apps running in the background.

Pricing

Betternet’s premium service pricing varies on where you purchase your Betternet Premium subscription from:

If you decide to purchase your subscription directly from the website then the prices are:

  • 1 Month for  $11.99 per month
  • 6 Months for $23.99 ($3.99 per month)
  • 12 Months for $35.99 ($2.99 per month)

If you decide to purchase your subscription from the iOS app then the prices are:

  • 1 Month at $11.99
  • 6 Months for $47.99
  • 12 Months for $71.99

If you decide to purchase your subscription directly from the Android app then the prices are:

  • 1 Month at $11.99
  • 6 Months for $47.94
  • 12 Months for $71.88

Who Should Use This VPN & Who Shouldn’t?

Betternet VPN has both a free and a premium version, and both are easy to use. However, the VPN is only recommended for those who just want a little more security while browsing because the Betternet VPN review is not good.

Though the browsing can’t be done 24 hours a day in the free version, thanks to its data limitation. It is not recommended to buy the premium version of the VPN, and if the free version does not satisfy your need, then there are many free VPNs in the market that are way better than Betternet.

If you are a dedicated streamer, gamer, or just want to give a serious buff to your security and connection, then Betternet is not the VPN that can do this job.
